Juan Ripolles is a Spanish artist. In contrast to many personal tragedies which punctuated his childhood, including the death of a twin brother and the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, his images are joyful. Perhaps in reaction to these ugly realities, Ripolles has created whimsy based on nature and fantastical mythology of joy. The artist is rarely without a fresh sprig of laurel in his teeth, his clothes splashed with bright paint. Ripolles personally idolizes the satyr, as emissaries connecting the world of nature with that of humans via art and song.
