Slavery by Another Name
“Slavery by Another Name,” is a work of investigative history by Douglas A. Blackmon. The book, Blackmon’s first, exposes — in damning detail — a de facto form of slavery that persisted in this country until World War II: blacks were arrested (often on dubious charges), then “leased” to Southern companies eager for cheap industrial labor. Chained, beaten and forced to perform grueling physical work, many died on the job.
